Favorite Posts of the Week – 2/27 Edition

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I’m so happy March is upon us…it’s my favorite month of the year. The weather is just gorgeous in Miami, there are lots of fun outdoor events to attend, and I get to celebrate another birthday!

Let’s get to my favorite posts from the week of February 27th:

My home office gets a lot of use. I occasionally work from home, and frequently do some late night work from there as well. We’ve done a decent job decorating the room in greys, whites and pops of green. However, after seeing this office – described as heaven’s front office – I’m thinking of doing a white-out redo! Check out Virginia’s blog – Live Love DIY – to see more of this redo, and check out the back of the office chair.

When I was planning my wedding I learned how important lighting is to help set the mood for the night. Up lighting in a color that helps accentuate your color scheme ties the whole room together. Monogram lighting is like the cherry on top. I personally didn’t have monogram lighting, but that’s only becuase I hadn’t seen this one featured on Style Me Pretty. How cute is this?

I’m fascinated by furniture referbs. My sister-in-law, Fit Chick on the Fly, recently completed a gorgeous project for her master bedroom that I’m hoping she’ll post soon, but for now here’s an amazing dresser refurbished for a baby nursery. I love the lace feature on the drawers and it seems like it’s SUPER easy to accomplish. Just lay the lace down and spray over it!!! Check out the full story on The Stories A & Z and little B.

I’m kinda over the rustic wedding trend. I guess it depends on the setting, but for the most part I’m desiring to see some super luxurious, glam weddings. This week Style Me Pretty featured an elegant wedding themed after Alice In Wonderland that really caught my eye. The tablescape created for the reception was so elegant and colorful. The lighting, mostly candlelight, creates an ultra romantic vibe.

I love this cake featured on Hostess with the Mostess! My birthday is coming up so what if I make my own super girly pink cake? I think it’s a great idea!

Red Carpet Inspiration – Trends from the Oscars

My favorite dress from Oscar night wasn’t even worn on the red carpet. Katie Holmes’ Oscar after-party look blew me away! Seriously, how gorgeous is her Elie Saab navy dress? She stunned at the Vanity Fair party the night of the Oscars and so it went under the radar, but it’s my favorite dress of the evening.

I love everything about this dress –  the embellishment along the top, the belted waist, and the flowy skirt. It is stunning.

Of course, I’m back to my old tricks and want to see how I can recreate some of the key elements of her style on a tighter budget.

Cocktail

What do you think about this cocktail version? It’s embellished at the top with a beaded feather pattern, is cinched at the waist, and has a flowy skirt. Pair this with a cute silver or black belt and I think we’ve done a great job of recreating Katie’s look for a less formal occassion.

Formal

How about this dress as a formal version of Katie’s dress? I love the cinched waist, flowy skirt, and even the ruched top – but I am longing for that beautiful embellishment that we see on Katie’s dress. Unfortunately, I haven’t found an evening dress to recreate Katie’s look exactly, but I still think this BCBG Maxazria version does a great job – plus it’s in that hot coral/orange color we’ve seen on Michelle Williams this award season.

Can YOU find a formal option to better recreate Katie’s Elie Saab look? Let me know in the comments!

Favorite Posts of the Week – 2/20 Edition

As you can tell by the silence on Casa Martinez this week, I’ve been a little busy. Last weekend I went to Disney World and Legoland to celebrate my nephew’s 8th birthday. We had a great time, but was a pretty tiring fun-filled weekend. Then on Tuesday morning I had to wake up bright and early to be a good citizen and report to jury duty. It was touch-and-go there for a few hours, but thankfully my stint in jury duty only lasted one day. Needless to say these events threw off my entire week!

Without further ado, let’s get to my favorite posts for the week of February 20th:

I love Key West so when I saw this fun, beach-casual wedding held at the Southernmost House I melted. Key West is a very unique place filled with many interesting characters and stories – from Ernest Hemingway and his cats, to the roosters that share the sidewalks with humans, to the fascinating stories about pirates and ghosts. It’s a place that my husband and I are very fond of and have spent several special moments there (our first trip together was to Key West and we’ve celebrated three New Years there).

So apparently my home decorating style is called “Transitional” which I only learned this week through Houzz.com. It’s sort of funny because I never felt like my style was really Modern, Traditional, or  Eclectic. I like bits and pieces of each style to represent my tastes, and most importantly putting something together that feels homey and comfortable.  Houzz’s defines Transitional style as “blends the comfort and warmth of traditional design with the clean profiles and understated colors of the contemporary look”, but also says that it can really be combination of any decorating style as long as it casual and comfortable. As you see on their post, Transitional style uses neutrals, but by no means does that mean dull — there are fun pieces, pops of color, and patterns that keep this style interesting.

What do YOU think? Is the Transitional style for those who are indecisive? Or do you think it’s a way to enjoy each style and represent the different facets of your personality?

I’ve been following Lily for a few months now and I really like her attainable, budget friendly style. Honestly, the style of some of the blogs I follow either aren’t realistic from a day-to-day perspective (aka too funky or uncomfortable) or are just out of my budget range; however, Lily keeps it real. I love that she always shares where she purchased her pieces which are usually places like Old Navy, Gap, Marshalls, and Forever 21. TOTALLY, TOTALLY reasonable!

Keep it up Lily!

For the past two years my Christmas decor has been an elegant combination of silver and gold. Both shades feel classic and timeless and so the combination, well done,  is just spectacular. However, after the Holiday season I pack away this amazing combo which is not to be seen again for another 11 months.

I love Houzz’s post on how to master the mix of gold and silver around your home despite the seasons. I prefer the combinations that include a shade of white which helps balance the bold statement you’re making with the gold and silver and neutralizes the space.

Favorite Posts of the Week: The Love Edition

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a sweet Valentine’s week.  My hubbie and I had a nice surf-and-turf dinner at home followed by a quiet night of TV watching. It was actually pretty perfect for a Tuesday night.

Although my hubbie and I had a quiet Valentine’s day I definitely got inspiration from the blog world for something more elaborate next year…or even for a random, romantic night any other day of the year.

Here are some of the sweetest and loveliest posts from the week of February 13th:

“Love”ly fashions

Reese Witherspoon was in the spirit this week when she stepped out in NYC in a cute heart-patterned dress. The Frugal Fashionista helps those of us on a budget recreate Reese’s look (although the dress she found is a bird-pattern…which satisfies my bird obsession, but doesn’t go with our love theme). Also, love the pop of red which screams “v-day”.  How much do you love the studded bag the Frugal Fashionista found similar to the one Reese is wearing? Love it!

Loving this bathroom makeover featured on DomestiKated Life.  Originally posted by AB Chao, the bathroom showcases a few cool pieces that you don’t usually find in a bathroom like a monogrammed shower curtain, framed word art, a runner (rug), and, um, Polaroid pictures taped to the wall. How does that hold up with all that humidity in the air? This bathroom design is pretty funky, but there is something sweet about it. What do YOU think?

I seriously want a monogrammed shower curtain – like now!

Showing some PDA

This adorable post from Spearmint Baby is a pregnancy shoot while she was at 34 weeks. I love the winter/snow theme. I actually don’t usually like pregnancy photos because I’m not a fan of the bare belly shots and so the fact that she’s bundled up is absolutely adorable and so sweet.

I’m definitely going to try to recreate this one with my hubbie during my next ski trip (preggers or not).

Craving this adorable cocktail perfect for a romantic night in. This recipe featured on Style Me Pretty includes chocolate and marshmallows as main ingredients…seriously, what’s not to love? I know my hubbie will chug it down!

Valentine's Day Cockatil by Sugar and Charm

How dainty are these cupcakes featured on Kara’s Party Ideas? I’m loving the light blue, pink, and red combination (which I’ve seen a lot in home decor lately too) and the unique designs on each cupcake. This is definitely something that’s going on my Adventures in Baking board on Pinterest!

Do or Don’t: Tail Skirts

I’m seeing a new trend pop up all over the internet. Looks like tail skirts are going to be all the rage for Spring and Summer. What is a tail skirt? Well, it’s almost like a mullet – party in the front and all business in the back. The front of the skirt is usually somewhere above the knee and the back falls somewhere between your calf and ankles.

I spotted my first tail skirt yesterday on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach and although I was a bit skeptical of this trend when I spotted it online  it was actually really cute in person. I love how they can be a casual outfit or you can dress it up for a nice, romantic dinner (aka yesterday’s Lincoln Road sighting).

What do YOU think? Will tail skirts end up being a “what was I thinking” trend?

Feel like a fashionista. Add layers!

I have a confession to make. I’m not a fashionista. I like shopping, I like looking good, and I like getting complimented on my outfits, BUT I kinda hate having to put outfits together.

Figuring out what to wear is sometimes a very time consuming process for me. In my mind, fashionistas can look at their closet and mix and match pieces they own to create an entirely new outfit. This is where I fall short. I look at my closet and all I see are old clothes and wear them pretty much exactly in the same way every time.

When I’m in the mood to switch things up my trick is to pull inspiration from several sources – like fashion blogs, celebrities, and Pinterest. One thing I always seem to gravitate towards is the layered look…and truthfully, I think that must be a chapter in the fashionista rule book. I’ve learned that layering is key – especially when you’re trying to freshen up your old wardrobe.

Jackets with scarves, a cardigan with a belt around the waist, necklaces of multiple lengths, layered tees, or a watch with several bangles and bracelets on the same arm…all different ways of layering. Here’s a round up of inspiration I found on Pinterest.

Do YOU use the layering trick?

Update:

Today while checking out the latest pins on Pinterest, I found this VERY timely image. A step-by-step guide to layering!!!! (I’m kinda on a high right now since this validates my layering theory). The step-by-step guide was originally posted by Made By Girl on her blog. Some of the styles are a little too gutsy for me, but I’m liking the sequins option. What do you think?

Red Carpet Inspiration – Trends from SAGs and Golden Globes

My favorite part of Hollywood’s award season is spending the days after the awards shows pouring over the different red carpet looks. Although many of the designers celebrities wear on the red carpet are out of reach for us “average” girls, I always find fun in pulling inspiration from these celebrity looks and trying to find more budget-friendly alternatives.

I have a wedding coming up in March and so I’m in the market for a new dress! I took at look at my favorite dresses from the SAG and Golden Globes and found similar looks on some of my favorite sites. (I’ve done all the leg-work for you…you’re welcome!)

Racey Lacey

Lace is HUGE this year! Michelle Williams wore an adorable, coral dress that I included as one of my favorite looks. I found a way to wear this hot trend – also worn by Emma Stone, Stacy Keibler, and Jessica Biel – in a cocktail dress or formal dress.

Sequin in a deep V

Even in her Cherrios cheerleading uniform, Naya Rivera is pretty hot. She really rocked it last weekend at the SAG awards in this deep V sequin dress. Also in sequin this award season – Nicole Richie and Maria Menounos both wore this hot trend at the Golden Globes.

Ruched (and one shoulder)

Hello super duper sexy Lea Michele! She’s obviously trying to break out of her geeky, Rachel Berry shell – and WOW! She’s owning the sexpot look with that red carpet pose! I really love BOTH of these trends – one shoulder and ruched. The BCBGMaxazria formal option is totally something I would see myself wearing to the upcoming March wedding. What do YOU think?

Baby got Back..(open back, that is!)

Clarie Danes must HATE this, but every time I see her I’m taken back to the days where she was Angela on My So Called Life. One of my absolute favorite shows…ever! Clarie always looks amazing and has fabulous style; her Golden Globes look was no disappointment. The front was gorgeous, but the back…WOW! I’m loving the cocktail dress I found from BCBGMaxazria – it actually pulls of two of the trends we’ve talked about today!
